Types of Japanese Food

There are several types of Japanese food and below are some of the popular Japanese food recipes. Some typically found in Japanese restaurants, while some are traditionally cooked at home.

Japanese Soy Bean Dishes
Soy bean dishes are common in every
Japanese meal and makes a great appetizer.
Agedashi Tofu
Agedashi Tofu are deep fried tofu that are dipped into light soy sauce.

 Miso Soup
Miso is a common appetizer for any meal of the day.

Japanese Specialty Dishes

 Tempura
Tempura are ingredients such as seafood, yam, vegetables that are dipped
in batter then deep fried. Taste great when dipped with tempura sauce.
Okonomiyaki
Okonomiyaki is inbetween a pizza and a pancake. Ingredients like seafood,
vegetables and meat can be mixed with the dough pan fried.

Gyoza
Gyoza are Japanese dumplings with ingredients in the centre
such as vegetables, meat or seafood.


Japanese  Rice Dishes
Rice is the most important ingredient in Japan and is used in several Japanese rice dishes.
Rice Bowl
A simple bowl of Japanese rice that is served with most Japanese meals.


 Donburi
A bowl of cooked Japanese rice served with some other toppings on top.
Examples of some popular donburi are beef teriyaki don, chicken
teriyaki don, tendon, oyakodon, katsudon, etc...


 Onigiri
Onigiri are rice balls made of cooked rice and are wrapped in seaweed.
They are seasoned and have food located in the centre.
Onigiri are easy to pack and easy to make, they are a popular Japanese snack.


 Fried Rice
Fried rice is originally a Chinese recipe but has been introduced to
Japanese culture. There are several kinds of Japanese fried rice
serve in Japanese restaurants.

Sushi
There are many kinds of sushi. A piece of sushi contains sushi rice that
comes with several toppings and then wrapped in seaweed.
Japanese Seafood Dishes
Japanese people eat a lot more fish compared to other countries. Study has shown this could be reason why Japan has relatively low rate of heart disease. Seafood is eaten in just about any form you can imagine, from raw, dried, boiled, grilled, deep fried or steamed.. Sushi is very affordable at Japanese restaurants outside Japan, yet it is actually expensive in Japan and is eaten mainly on special occasions. 


 Sashimi
Sashimi is raw seafood. Only certain types of fish can be enjoyed raw if
they are fresh and prepared correctly. Raw seafood are enjoyed with soy sauce and wasabi.


 Yakizakana
Yakizakana is grilled fish. Several types of fish are enjoyed when grilled.

Japanese Noodle Dishes / Japanese Ramen
Typical Japanese noodles are categorized as udon, ramen and soba. These noodles are cooked fresh and can be served as hot or cold.

 Soba
Soba noodles are made of buckwheat flour and are about as thick as
spaghetti. Japanese soba noodles can be cold or hot.

 Udon
Udon noodles are made of wheat flour and are thicker than soba.
Like soba noodles, udon and can also be served cold or hot.

 Ramen
Ramen are noodles prepared in a bowl of soup with various toppings.
Ramen is one of the most popular noodle dishes in Japan that
comes in several tasty soup base from miso, shoyu, or shiyo.

 Yakisoba
Yakisoba are fried or deep fried noodles.




Japanese Nabe Dishes
Nabe dishes are hot pot dishes that are prepared in a hot pot. 


 Sukiyaki
A dish prepared with various sliced meat,
vegetables, mushrooms,
tofu and noodles. Egg can either be dipped in the sukiyaki or
ingredients can be dipped in the egg before eating.


 Shabu-Shabu
Shabu-shabu is Japanese dish with several ingredients from
sliced meat,
vegetables, mushrooms and tofu.
Japanese Meat Dishes
Japanese are not only known for their seafood recipes but they also offer some common delicious meat dishes from yakitori, teriyaki beef/chicken and tonkatsu. 


 
Yakitori
Yakitori are grilled diced chicken on skewers.
Tonkatsu
Tonkatsu are deep fried pork cutlets and best served with tonkatsu sauce.
Teriyaki
Chicken and beef teriyaki are chicken and beef cooked with teriyaki sauce.  



Tempura Roll Recipe



4 servings
Prep time: 30 minutes

Ingredients
-3 sheet Nori
-2 cups Sushi Rice
-Tempura batter/mix
-1/4 Avocado
-1/4 Cucumber
-assorted seafood/vegetables for tempura

Directions:
1. dip assorted seasfood and vegetables in tempura batter.
2. deep fry until ready then set aside.
3. Take the half sheet of nori and put it shiny side down, and place a thin layer of sushi rice.
4. Flip it over so that the rice is against the sushi rolling mat.
5. Place the tempura ,avocado ,cucumber horizontally across the nori.
6. Roll the sushi using and cut 3/4" thick. then serve

Ikura Roll Recipe

Prep time: 30 minutes

Ingredients
-2 cup prepared sushi rice
-3 sheet nori
-4 teaspoon wasabi paste
-8 ounces salmon roe (ikura)


Directions:
1. Prepare 12 finger sushi by dipping your right hand into a bowl of vinegared water and then remove excess water, and take up about 2 tablespoons sushi rice. Form the rice into 12 small oval bite-sized portions, measuring about 2x1".
2. Cut the nori into 12 strips, each 1X7".
3. Wrap a 1" strip of nori around the sides of each finger sushi, shiny side out (sticking it closed with a grain of rice, if necessary), creating a tiny collar all around the rice.
4. Dab a little wasabi paste on top of the rice inside the nori collar. Delicately spoon about 1 tablespoon of the salmon roe into each nori collar. Serve immediately.

Alaskan Roll Recipe

Ingredients
-2 tablespoon of Rice wine vinegar
-4 tablespoons ribbon kelp
-2 cup of sushi rice
-6 oz smoked salmon, sliced
-4 servings cilantro
-8 teaspoons of wasabi Paste
-2 serving Diakon radish

Directions:
1. Lay the salmon in a strip in the center of the rice from side to side on the seaweed sheet
2.Then spread the wasabi paste on the salmon. Lay a sprig of the horsetail on top of the wasabi. Then lay a single row of the pickles on top of the horsetail.
3. To roll the sushi, roll from the bottom to the top. Tuck the bottom edge of the roll into the top edge of the rice. Roll the extra kelp to form a seal. Using the mat, keep rolling to tighten and create a roll. Cut 3/4" and serve.

Futomaki Roll Recipe

Ingredients
-2 cups Japanese rice
-3 cups water
-1/3 cup rice vinegar
-3 Tbsp sugar
-1 tsp salt
-1 Japanese cucumber, sliced into 1/2 cm strips
-2 eggs
-1 tbsp soya sauce
-2 tsp sugar
-1 carrot, sliced into 1/2 cm strips
-1 japanese fishcake, sliced into 1/2 cm strips
-4 sheets of nori


Directions:
1.Dissolve rice vinegar, sugar and salt in a sauce pan over low heat. then let it cool.
2.Sprinkle the vinegar mixture over the cooked sushi rice and fold the rice the rice paddle quickly.
3.Beat eggs and sugar in a small bowl. Add soya sauce.
4.Cook rolled omelet and cool. Cut it into long strips.
5.Spread 1 cup of sushi rice on top of the nori sheet.
6.Place the cuccumber, carrot, egg and fishcake lengthwise on the rice. Roll up the bamboo mat, pressing forward to shape the sushi into a cylinder.
7.Press the bamboo mat firmly and remove it from the sushi. Cut 3/4" pieces.

Rainbow Roll Recipe

Ingredients
-2 cups Sushi Rice
-4 Nori Seaweed
-Ahi Tuna
-Fresh Salmon
-Halibut

Directions:
1. Spread a thin layer of sushi rice over the seaweed, do not cover completely. Leave a 1-inch margin at the ends uncovered to seal the roll.

2. Place tuna, salmon, avocado, and halibut and sprouts length wise then Sprinkle with sesame seeds.

3. Roll then cut 3/4" thick. Serve with wasabi, soy sauce and pickled ginger.

Tamago Sushi Recipe

Ingredients
-4 eggs
-3 tbsp of mirin
-2 tbsp of soy sauce
-2 tbsp of sugar
-seaweed

2.After 3-4 min, use a kitchen spoon to fold the omelet twice.

Ingredients
-2 cups sushi rice
-4 nori sheets
-BBQ eel
-1 avacado
-scallion
-crab sticks
-small cream cheese
-crushed macadamia nut

Directions:
1.Place nori on rolling mat then spread the sushi rice all over nori except about 2 cm from the edges.
2.lay down your eel, avocado slices, scallion, crab sticks and cream cheese on the nori.
3.roll the nori inside out.
4.take the ready inside out roll and roll it in crushed macadamia buts.
5.deep fry for a few seconds and slice. serve with spicy mayo and eel sauce drizzled on top.

Boston Sushi Roll Recipe

Ingredients
-2 cups sushi rice
-4 nori sheets
-20 small shrimps
-1 Avocado
-1 cucumber
-50g Tobiko


Directions:
1.Spread the rice on the nori sheet.
2.Add the avocado and cucumber and then line up the shrimps
3.Roll it inside-out style and cut the endings, but leave the rest whole for now.
6.Use a little spoon to carfully spread some Tobiko on the roll.
  You can cover the intire roll with it, or just the top side

Unagi Roll Recipe

- 200g Eel

Dragon Roll Recipe


4 servings
Prep time: 20 minutes

Ingredients
- 2 cups sushi rice
- 4 nori sheets
- 10 medium size shrimps
-  1/2 cup Tempura
-  1 Avocado
-  1 Cucumber
-  50g Tobiko
-  50g BBQ eel


Directions:
1. Prep the shrimp and dip in tempura and deep fry for about 1 min or until the outside gets brownish.

2. Slice the cucumber into long slices, and use a peeler to peal thin avocado layers.

3.Spread the rice on the nori sheet, and flip it over the mat so that the rice is now facing upwards. Lay the avocado the cucumber stiks you have precut, and line up some tempura shrimps and on top of that slices of eel. Roll it inside-out style and cut the endings, but leave the rest whole for now.

4.Elegantly, cover the top of the roll with the layers of avocado you made with the peeler, and use the bamboo matt to tighten it to the roll.

5.Use a little spoon to carefully spread some Tobiko on the roll. You can cover the intire roll with it.
Now you can cut, and reline the roll in a shape of a dragon. You can use your imagination to create dragon eyes from tobiko, and dragon antennas from carrot stiks.
